How to choose bathroom tiles

AreaWhat works best
Bathroom floorPorcelain in a matt or textured finish with a suitable slip rating for wet areas. Large formats mean fewer grout lines to clean.
Shower wallsGlazed porcelain or ceramic. Gloss or satin finishes are easy to wipe down.
Feature or nicheZellige-look, finger mosaics, patterned or 3D tiles add character in a small area.
Vanity splashbackSubway, squares or handmade-look tiles in gloss.

Slip resistance: in Australia, floor tiles are tested to AS 4586 and given a P rating (P0 to P5, higher means more slip-resistant). Wet and outdoor areas need a higher rating than dry indoor floors. Ask us for the tested rating of any range before you choose.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tile for a bathroom floor?
Porcelain is the most common choice for bathroom floors because it is dense and hard-wearing. Choose a matt or textured finish with a slip rating suitable for wet areas, and ask us for the tested P rating of the range.
Can I use the same tile on the bathroom walls and floor?
Often, yes, as long as the tile is rated for floors and has a suitable slip rating. Many porcelain ranges come in several sizes so you can use larger tiles on the floor and the same colour on the walls.
What size tiles make a small bathroom look bigger?
Larger formats such as 600x600mm or 600x1200mm reduce grout lines and can make a small bathroom feel more open. Light, warm colours also help.
Do you help design bathrooms?
Yes. Mirror Ceramics is a tile and bathroom design showroom. Bring your floor plan or photos to Hamilton North and our team will help you choose tiles and fittings.
